SUMMER EDITION

We know that it can be difficult to find accessible and affordable ways to keep your children active over the summer. That’s why we developed the Kids Run Club at Home program to provide opportunities for kids to not only be active over the summer, but to also experience to fun and joy of movement.

We’ve created Kids Run Club at Home packages in French and English to guide kids, and hopefully their families, in running over the summer. The packages include three training options (2, 4 or 5 km) and tips for improving running and making it more fun. Participants are encouraged to walk, run or roll in a way that is comfortable for them. Be sure to check out the videos on the Kids Run Club YouTube channel where the Kids Run Club team and special guests share their top tips to help participants of all abilities experience success.

Kids Run Club at Home is designed to last for eight weeks over the summer and includes three runs each week. With help from their parents, participants will select a running route close to home measuring 250-500 metres that will be repeated depending on the length of the scheduled run. We also recommend using a variety of running routes and locations if possible to keep the running more interesting.

Weekly Themes

Each week has a theme that families can use to add some extra fun. This might be dressing in red & white to celebrate Canada Day for one of the runs in Week 1 or getting up extra early to do a sunrise run during Week 4. We encourage parents to share images or videos of the summer adventures on the KRC Twitter or Facebook platforms.

Be sure to check out our Let’s Keep Moving #AlphabetActivityChallenge you can use as a warm-up or just to add a little extra movement to your day. Make up your own challenge or select from the high energy videos posted in French and English on the Kids Run Club YouTube page.

Kids Run Club at Home will conclude at the end of the summer with the final run of 2, 4 or 5 km. Participants are encouraged to download a final run bib which they can personalize and a certificate of achievement (English or French) that recognizes their hard work and determination.

Be sure to follow Kids Run Club and the Healthy Tomorrow Foundation’s social media platforms and share our posts about Kids Run Club at Home and the #LetsKeepMoving challenge.

The Doctors Nova Scotia Healthy Tomorrow Foundation (DNSHTF) has successfully completed our first year as a registered charity responsible for implementing Kids Run Club (KRC). Kids Run Club saw almost 16,000 kids from more than 220 schools participating and we reached our fundraising goal for the year! We are excited to continue working tirelessly to raise the funds required for a sustainable future for the KRC so that children across the province continue to have access to free, physical activity programming and healthy living education.

Much of our success is due to our fabulous team: our Board of Directors and dedicated staff. Our staff is a team of two and a few seasonal KRC reps; small but mighty! In the coming year, we’ll see some changes to our staff makeup. Danielle Cyr, our Communications and Fund Development Officer, will be moving to British Columbia later this fall and will conclude her work with us at the end of this month. Danielle has been a valuable member of our team and is leaving us with some fantastic communications assets that will help us continue to grow the KRC brand and community of support. The good news is we will be contracting with Danielle to do some project work throughout the year, as needed. We wish Danielle all the best with this exciting move.

We would also like to announce that long-time KRC program representative, Leah Jabbour, is joining the Foundation in a full-time capacity as our KRC and Fund Development Coordinator. In the capacity of program representative, Leah has supported KRC since 2011 and has been instrumental in the continued growth and success of KRC. Over the past eight years, Leah has on-boarded a great number of schools, made hundreds of site visits and delivered running clinics and presentations to thousands of students. She’s developed some invaluable relationships with teachers and coaches across the province and has been instrumental in bringing sponsors on board to help keep KRC thriving.

We are very excited to have Leah join the DNSHTF in this new capacity and are confident that her contributions will help us create a strong future for the Foundation and Kids Run Club.

Kids Run Club is excited to welcome Danielle Cyr as the Doctors Nova Scotia Healthy Tomorrow Foundation Communications and Fund Development Officer.

Danielle has a diverse background in sport as an athlete, coach and administrator. She is currently the head coach of the Mount Saint Vincent University women’s soccer program, where she also played five years as a varsity athlete while pursuing her Bachelor of Public Relations. She previously held the position of Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator at Soccer Nova Scotia. In the spring of 2018, Danielle started her Masters of Professional Communication at Royal Roads University where she is working on her thesis exploring topics in leadership, sport and gender. She is a long-time volunteer with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport as a True Sport Champion and believes that good sport can make a great difference.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Kids Run Club team and the Doctors Nova Scotia Healthy Tomorrow Foundation,” says Cyr. “There are so many important benefits physical activity provides young people. I am looking forward to continuing the great work Kids Run Club has done inspiring Nova Scotia’s youth to sit less and move more.”

Danielle will be working to continue to spread the message about Kids Run Club across the province and share all of the amazing success stories of participants and coaches. She will also be looking to create and maintain partnerships with champions and advocates in the community to help provide more Nova Scotian kids with the opportunity to fall in love with running and healthy living. Welcome to the team Danielle!
